Leather & Gold Feather Earrings // DIY

Today we're making leather feather earrings. That's right. Leather feather earrings. Try saying that three times fast.

These earrings were inspired by this pin on pinterest, but I couldn't find the original site that they came from. 

And if you aren't super crafty or you don't have the supplies, you're in luck! I made quite a few extra pairs and listed them in my ETSY SHOP.

Read on to learn how to make them yourself!

Here's what you'll need:

-pleather - you only need about 3 inches width

-eyelets & eyelet kit

-gold chain

-gold paint

-paintbrush

-fabric scissors

Here's what you do:

1. Draw out your feather pattern (or just look up some clip art and print it off)

2. Using the pattern, trace your feather onto the leather and then cut it out along the lines.

3. Hammer eyelets into the top. This is optional, but makes the earrings more durable and it looks better.

4. Cut out the frillies on the feather. (I don't know the technical name). Basically, make a bunch of cuts and then every so often, cut out a chunk to make it look more feathery.

5. Paint the gold onto the feathers. For a gradient look, I used a dry brushing technique. To do this, get a little paint on the paintbrush and then wipe most of it off on a paper towel. Then, paint a section near the top lightly with what is left on the paintbrush. Gradually add more and more paint to the paintbrush as you near the bottom to get the faded gold appearance.

Allow to dry.

6. Take the gold chain and separate it into long pieces and shorter pieces.

7. Assemble the earrings - one leather feather, one long chain, and one short chain per hook.

And voila! You're done!
